Global
Change and Mountain Regions
Abstract
January,
2001
This document
describes an implementation strategy for collaborative research
on Global Change and Mountain Regions. The objectives of the
initiative are to: Develop ways to detect global environmental
change in mountain environments; Define the effects of these
changes on both mountain regions and lowland systems dependent
on mountain resources; Make proposals towards sustainable
land, water, and resource management for mountain regions.
To achieve
the above objectives, four main activities are programmed:
1. Long-term monitoring of indicators of environmental change
in mountain regions;
2. Integrated model-based studies of environmental change
in different mountain regions;
3. Process studies along altitudinal gradients and in associated
headwater basins;
4. Sustainable land use and natural resources management.
