Coastal
GTOS strategic design and phase 1 implementation plan
GTOS-36
Due
to the importance of a wide variety of coastal ecosystems
in terms of their ecology and high value to humans, GTOS has
initiated the Coastal Module (C-GTOS) with the primary goal
to detect, assess and predict global and large-scale regional
change associated with land-based, wetland and freshwater
ecosystems along coasts.
The following
document is the strategic design for a mature coastal observing
system and was developed by the C-GTOS panel of scientific
experts. The plan is complementary to the coastal activities
of GOOS,
GCOS
and IGOS,
and identifies ways to implement the strategy during the initial
phase of the initiative.
The first
phase implementation products are designed to provide tests
of concept and develop critical capabilities for the observing
system. These products include the following::
1. enhancement
of TEMS;
2. distribution
and the rate of change of population, urbanization and land
use in the coastal environment;
3. vulnerability
of ecosystem services in deltaic systems;
4. management
of conservation and cultural sites in the coastal zone;
5. distribution
of sites appropriate for analyses of delivery systems.
Please
contact the GTOS Secretariat
for hard copies, additional information, or interest in collaborating
in developing the implementation products and C-GTOS module.
