Date
of meeting

15-16 January 2003
Background
and Objectives

An expert panel,
comprised of members of the international coastal observing
community, will convene for a two-day meeting to discuss development
of a Coastal Theme for the Integrated Global Observing Strategy
(IGOS). IGOS is a strategic planning process that provides
a framework for decisions and resource allocation. International
interest in coastal regions, along with resources dedicated
to their observation, is rapidly expanding given an increased
awareness of their socio-economic and scientific importance,
particularly within the context of global change. Establishment
of an IGOS Coastal Theme would help coordinate and strengthen
existing and planned observational (in situ and space-based)
capabilities and the attendant decision-making process by
promoting development of an integrated, sustainable global
coastal observing strategy. There will be a meeting in June
2003 in Paris of the IGOS Partners at which a Coastal Theme
could be formally proposed. The intent of this workshop is
to build a consensus among the coastal community toward this
goal and commence preparation of the Coastal Theme proposal
document.
Workshop
Deliverables

1. Consensus
to submit Coastal Theme Proposal at IGOS Partners meeting
in June 2003.
2. Outline and preliminary
draft of IGOS Coastal Theme proposal document; identify follow-on
writing assignments and milestones.
3. Identification of additional
members of Coastal Theme Team.
4. Summary of workshop
and other supporting materials made available on related websites.
