GOFC-GOLD fosters harmonization of global and regional land cover products

From 14 to16 July 2004, the ESA GOFC-GOLD Project Office and the GTOS Secretariat jointly organized a workshop on the harmonization of land cover products. The objectives of the meeting were to establish the strategy to meet the growing need for detailed, accurate, and harmonized information on land cover and land cover change products.

The following workshop results were obtained:

1. Framework for international harmonization efforts (consensus on theory, key actors,
implementation strategy).

2. Endorsement of the Land Cover Classification System (LCCS-2) as the common language.

3. Establishment of test beds for the development and evaluation of harmonization mechanisms.

4. Refined strategy for the validation of global land cover products.
