GTOS has the
pleasure to inform you that a Memorandum of Cooperation has been
signed with the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar, 1971) so
as to formalise joint efforts of the two institutions towards conservation
and wise use of wetlands globally. The signature ceremony took place
at FAO headquarters (Rome, Italy) in the presence of Dr Peter Bridgewater,
Secretary-General of the Ramsar Convention, and Mr Alexander Müller,
Assistant Director-General of the FAO Sustainable Development Department.
The Memorandum
of Cooperation formalises the work that GTOS and, in particular,
its Panel on Coastal ecosystems (C-GTOS) is currently undertaking
within the framework of the Scientific and Technical Review Panel
(STRP) of the Ramsar Convention on issues related to wetlands mapping
and inventory for monitoring and assessment.
GTOS/Ramsar
cooperation will be presented at the 27th International Conference
of the Society of Wetland Scientists (Cairns, Australia, 9 - 14
July, 2006) where Prof. Robert Christian, Chair of the C-GTOS Panel,
will be presenting a paper, co-authored with Stefano Mazzilli, Lucilla
Spini, and Peter Bridgewater on “Ramsar Wetlands as Sentinels
for Global Coastal Observations”.
