Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Which sites are part of the Coastal theme of GTOS (C-GTOS), and what are the criteria for registration?

The coastal GTOS programme, and related sites included in the C-GTOS TEMS module, address four key issues of coastal observation, described in the introduction to this module. TEMS coastal sites are generally located near the coast at low altitudes. Sites can be found using the TEMS mapping tool, but due to the variety of definitions of coastal areas, a strict geographic boundary is not used (GTOS, 2005).
All sites included in TEMS must have relevance to GTOS priority areas and adhere to a few key issues of observation continuity and data availability.

GTOS priority areas:
  1. changes in land quality;
  2. availability of freshwater resources;
  3. loss of biodiversity;
  4. climate change;
  5. impacts of pollution and toxicity.

GTOS TEMS site requirements:
  1. Active data gathering: Actively collect, archive, and/or distribute environmental data on terrestrial/coastal ecosystems.
  2. International interest: Demonstrated interest in international collaboration that is tangible and involves responsible individuals who are committed to this orientation.
  3. Expectation of continuity: A reasonable history of terrestrial observations and/or security of long-term tenure and funding.
  4. Extent of coverage: Either individually or collectively contribute to one or more levels in the Global Hierarchical Observing Strategy (GHOST).
Further information on criteria for TEMS sites can be found here, and information on how to register sites in the new coastal module of TEMS is included in the following Q&A.

Q2: How do I register my coastal site within TEMS?

GTOS is currently seeking sites to join the newly created coastal module of TEMS. If you would like to register a site, and have read the previous Q&A above describing TEMS coastal sites and eligibility, please use the following web pages to submit an application for review: Registration of sites in TEMS.
If you would like to suggest a coastal site that is not currently included in TEMS, or have any further queries about the new coastal module, please email the GTOS Secretariat or use the online feedback form.
