The following section provides links to the main organizations and activities that are involved with hydrology issues.

International organizations

Land of Water development division
(AGLW) of the FAO. Dedicated to global freshwater including supporting FAO member nations in sustainable use of limited fresh water resources.

Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) is an integrated programme of research, observations, and science activities ultimately leading to the prediction of global and regional climate change. GEWEX looks at the entire water cycle from both a climatic and atmospheric perspective.

Global Observing Systems Information Center (GOSIC). Provides access to data and information, and overviews of the structure and programs for GCOS, GOOS, and GTOS.

International Commission on Snow and Ice (ICSI). The study of snow and ice in all its forms.

International Office of Water (IOW). The objective of IOW is to gather public and private partners involved in water resources management and protection in France, Europe and in the world and develop a partners' network. The site contains many links to data holders.

International Water Resources Association (IRWA). A journal dedicated to global water, the goal is to build and strengthen partnerships and mechanisms to facilitate the sustainable use of water resources worldwide.

United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO): Water Portal. The site provides links to the current UNESCO and UNESCO-led programmes on freshwater and serves as an interactive point for sharing, browsing and searching websites of water-related organizations, government bodies and NGOs.

United Nations Environment Network (UNEP.Net): Freshwater. Contains information of activities, environmental information, and data providers. Facilitates and encourages the exchange of information using the most current internet technologies.

World Wildlife Fund (WWF): HydroSHEDS. WWF's Conservation Science Program is currently developing a new and innovative global hydrological database, based on high-resolution elevation data obtained during a Space Shuttle flight for NASA's Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). HydroSHEDS stands for "Hydrological data and maps based on SHuttle Elevation Derivatives at multiple Scales."

Water cycle and water quality

NASA Earth Observatory: The Water Cycle This site contains a general introduction to the water cycle and to the Aqua Spacecraft

WATeRS A portal for water quality information products from operational remote sensings that serves near-real time satellite derived water quality information, open and interactively on the Internet. WATeRS enables users to interactively explore remote sensing products, and to seamlessly combine this with other geographical data.
