This section contains
(if available) real three dimensional digital elevation models (DEM) of an area measuring
100x100 km around each T.site (the T.site being at the centre).
The DEM is a clip of the SRTM dataset at 90 metres (horizontal resolution) reprocessed
for gap filling by the Global Land Cover Network (GLCN). SRTM data are only available in a range of latitudes
between +60 and -60 degrees.
On top of the DEMs, Landsat imagery from three different sensors has then been draped. ETM+ and
TM are in near-real colours, whereas the MSS is a 421 band combinations. The sensors reflect
the technical evolution of the Landsat satellite series in time.
MSS (Landsat 1 to 5) sensor goes as far as 1972 (the scenes used hereby range from 1972 and 1978),
TM (Landsat 4 to 5) to 1990 circa (actual range 1982 to 1998), ETM+ (Landsat 7) 2000 circa
(real range 1999 to 2003).
The Landsat imagery is part of the FAO historical archive originally provided
by NASA and the Global Land Cover Facility (GLCF) of the University of Maryland.
Unavailability of the 3D model (or of part of it) might depend on the geographic location of the T.site
outside the range of the SRTM data, on the lack of coverage of the Landsat
imagery archive or on the absence of the T.site's coordinates in the TEMS database.
However, if only partially available, the models can be still of interest, therefore we published them despite the defects. Future improvements will be made.
If you spot some errors, please let us know by writing to gtos (at) fao.org and we
will try to solve them.
The models you see here are the result of a patially automated process. The standard
band stretching applied to Landsat images is 2%. Height factor is 1/log(hmax-hmin).
