The way forward to scale up implementation of the Great Green Wall initiative

The First Conference on the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel Initiative (GGWSSI) is a global event will be held in Dakar, Senegal from 2-7 May 2016. It will gather more than 20 African countries North and South of the Sahara and all partners of the GGWSSI initiative to discuss the way forward to scale up implementation of the initiative to follow through on world leaders’ commitment at the Paris Climate Change Conference

The Conference Objectives:

  • Deepen commitment of participating countries and organizations to transformational actions
  • Communicate results achieved
  • Share experiences and knowledge across implementing partners

The Conference highlights:

  • One-day High Level segment bringing together African Ministers and development partners
  • Three days of technical sessions to exchange and share knowledge about programs and projects in support of the Great Green Wall, such as:
- The $1.1 billion WB/GEF Sahel and West Africa Program (SAWAP) 
- The restoration approach of FAO’s Action Against Desertification programme
- The Local Environmental Coalition for a Green Union (FLEUVE) project
  • Practical interactive seminars on innovation, communication and knowledge services
