High-level event on Great Green Wall at opening day of COFO 23

Rome – A high-level event on the Great Green Wall at the opening day of FAO’s Committee on Forestry (COFO) will showcase countries' support to Africa’s flagship rural development programme stressing the need for increased investment to upscale its efforts.

The event will be opened by the Director-General and will allow high level representatives of countries partnering in the Great Green Wall initiative to share their accomplishments and the challenges they face, and discuss how FAO’s can bolster its support to the initiative, taking into account the recommendations of the recent Great Green Wall Conference in Dakar, May 2016 and the upcoming Climate Change Conference in Marrakech. 

At the same time, it will be stressed that efforts need to be urgently matched with investments by development actors and policymakers in order to ensure the long-term sustainability of Africa's drylands and of local people's livelihoods.
