This course is carried out within the framework of the agreement signed by FAO and ITAIPU Binacional, towards the strengthening of institutional capacities and public policies through triangular South-South cooperation.

The goal of this course is to promote reflection on the sustainable production of goods and services in forest-farming and aquicultural-fishing systems for family farming, based on the experiences and lessons learned by the Cultivating Good Water Program implemented by Itaipu in the Parana 3 Watershed, Brazil.

Both FAO and Itaipu have made a commitment to contribute to the development of capacities that encourage and foster initiatives that provide opportunities of productive chaining to family farmers, for sustainable development in the countries of the Region. Once having completed the course, and based on the reviewed themes and experiences, participants are expected to achieve a holistic view of the sustainable management of natural resources for the development of social-environmental actions.

Course: Cultivating Good Water Program: methodologies for the integral and sustainable production of goods and services for the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean

Methodology:

This course is implemented through self-learning, with the participant being responsible for building their own knowledge. It is structured into five technical-pedagogical units for their exploration in sequence. Once a unit has been fully reviewed, the following one can be accessed.

Each unit describes a different subject in its contents and activities, although, as a whole, they determine the achievement of the learning goal. Through the course, the participant will have a chance to review concepts, know and reinforce procedures, and apply criteria. The technical-pedagogical units are associated to key concepts of the study theme; the local, regional and global overview of the sector; the investigation, technologies and good practices in matters of sustainable management of natural resources.

The methodology considers the systematic application of different learning tools and self-assessment exercises per unit that will facilitate the understanding of the contents. The review of the contents of this course requires a dedication of approximately 40 hours, which can vary depending on the references to be reviewed. The recommendation is to hold one-hour sessions per day.

General Objective:

Promote reflection on the sustainable production of goods and services in forest-farming and aquicultural-fishing systems for family farming, based on the experiences and lessons learned by the Cultivating Good Water Program implemented by Itaipu in the Parana 3 Watershed, Brazil, as well as the experiences developed by FAO.

Specific Objectives:

• Contribute to the ownership of concepts and methodologies associated to the integral and responsible management of natural resources and good practices for family production, through a pedagogical proposal that brings together knowledge and specific experiences carried out both by the Cultivating Good Water Program and by FAO-managed projects.
• Stimulate the diffusion of the new tools and methodologies for technologies, good agricultural practices and socioproductive models, spatial planning and management, necessary for the sustainability of family farming and the responsible management of natural resources.
