EAF-Nansen Programme

EAF-Nansen project taxonomy and marine species identification workshop

17/12/2015

Twenty participants from 7 countries attended a training workshop on basic taxonomy and marine species identification at the Eduardo Modlane University of Maputo, Mozambique. The course, organized by EAF-Nansen Project and intended for scientists and fishery data collectors started on 31 August and finished on 12 September 2015. This workshop is the first initiative of a broader programme aimed at strengthening the knowledge base on marine resources and biodiversity in developing countries. Integrating information on biodiversity with fisheries information is an essential component of an ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF). Correct identification is essential for collecting information on catches and, more broadly, is required in various aspects of fishery research and management.

The objective of the workshop was to improve the capabilities of scientists and fishery data collectors to correctly identify marine species of interest to fisheries in the wider EAF context.
