Port call event in Bangladesh

In conjunction with the arrival of the R/V Dr Fridtjof Nansen in Bangladesh, a port call event was organized on 2 August 2018  at the Grain Silo Jetty, Chittogram port, Bangladesh.

The surveyin the waters of Bangladesh, carried out from 2 to 17 August, saw the participation of 18 national scientists.

This leg is part of a wider survey in the waters of the Bay of Bengal started on 21 June in Colombo, Sri Lanka that covered the continental shelf and uppers slope of Sri Lanka until 17 June. After completion of the survey off Sri Lanka the vessel moved northwards to complete oceanographic sampling in the international waters of the Bay of Bengal. Survey scope and objectives of the survey were discussed and agreed to during a regional meeting held in Colombo, Sri lanka in August 2017. In Bangladesh the main emphasis was to map and assess the pelagic fish resources on the continental shelf.

The event was opened by Mr Narayan Chandra Chandra,  M. P. Honorable Minister, Fisheries and Livestock and chaired by Mr Md Raisul Alam Mondal, Honorable Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Government of Bangladesh.

The FAO Representative in Bangladesh, David W. Doolan, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Bangladesh, also delivered a speech before proceeding with the guided tour of the vessel for the invited guests.
