In 2017, "Nutrition and Food Safety" was implemented as its own theme in the new phase of the EAF-Nansen Programme for the first time. This research area is intended to increase knowledge on the nutritional importance of fish as food in developing countries. Fish and other seafoods have until now been underrepresented in strategies to combat and prevent hunger and malnutrition in these countries. On Friday 5th July, the EAF-Nansen Programme is hosting a special session at the WIOMSA Scientific Symposium. The session entitled The EAF-Nansen Programme: Research contributions in the Indian Ocean in support of regional and global policy and management processes will feature presentations on the preliminary results of the surveys that the R/V Dr Fridtjof Nansen conducted in the Western Indian Ocean in 2018. It will also be an opportunity to provide guidance on the proposed research projects and discuss policy and management priorities to guide future work. A group of 20 experts from 12 countries, FAO and the World Fish Centre met in Rome from 2 to 4 July under the science plan theme 8: Nutrition and Food Safety. The objectives for the workshop was to prepare outlines for scientific papers from the data collected from the cruises and discuss research priorities related to food safety and nutrition in the context of the EAF-Nansen Programme.
