Food safety internship focused on microplastics in seafood and human health effects

Start Date: 15 June
Duration: 3 months
Supervisor(s): Jogeir Toppe, Esther Garrido Gamarro

Under the overall supervision of the Fishery Industry Officer and the Food Safety and Quality Officer, the intern will carry out the following tasks:

  1. Identify major areas and hotspots of microplastic contamination affecting the major fish and shellfish species/seafood commodities possibly contributing to microplastics ingestion in human diets
  2. Identify the main types of microplastics and related contaminants present in seafood and their physiological distribution and potential for risk to humans
  3. Collect data on human health effects and toxicity of most common microplastics and associated/adsorbed toxic/hazardous substances present in seafood
  4. Identify data gaps
  5. Identify possible case studies in selected regions, with special emphasis on developing countries and data poor situations.
  6. Present risk assessment approaches and models appropriate to microplastics contamination of seafood
  7. Provide recommendations and road map for further data collection needed for risk assessments
  8. Identify possible institutions and experts to partner with for collecting data and for conducting selected risk assessments
  9. Develop a draft concept note for an expert workshop on experiences of seafood safety risk assessment in cases of microplastics pollution

Minimum qualifications:

  • Degree in Food Science or related field
  • Computer/word processing skills
  • Working level of English

Preferred qualifications:

  • Academic education preferably at the masters degree level
  • Solid analytical foundation
  • Strong interest in trade and marketing issues of food and food products
  • Relevant work experience
  • Experience within the fisheries or aquaculture sector
  • Fluent in English, both orally and written
     

Communication intern focused on creating infographics about energy use and the seafood sector

Start Date: August 1
Duration: 3 months
Supervisor(s): John, Ryder, Turan Rahimzadeh

Under the overall supervision of the Senior Fishery Industry Officer and the Liaison and Advocacy Manager, the intern will carry out the following tasks: 

  1. Complete a desk study on the role of carbon footprints in the seafood industry (focusing on post-harvest) using recent FAO publications and create an infographic to represent the topic and results
  2. Assist in developing a communication plan via GLOBEFISH for new infographics and promotional material
  3. Finalize a previously designed infographic and create a short explanatory article

Minimum qualifications:

  • Degree in Economics, Environmental Sciences or related field
  • Experience in graphic design
  • Working level of English

Preferred qualifications:

  • Academic education preferably at the masters degree level
  • Solid analytical foundation
  • Strong interest in trade and marketing issues of food and food products
  • Relevant work experience
  • Experience within the fisheries or aquaculture sector
  • Fluent in English, both orally and written
  • Strong writing skills
  • Passion for graphic design and visuals communication
