European Price Report - December 2018

Year published: 2018

Monthly prices for about 600 fish products and an overview of the major trends on the European market, reported by an extensive correspondent network.

December 2018.

Abstract: Demand for fishery products in Europe is strong as Christmas approaches. Prices for most fresh products, from both capture fisheries and aquaculture, are trending upwards. Shrimp and lobster are attracting very keen buying interest from the retail sector and the catering trade, driving prices higher. Strong demand from China is also influencing trade in European markets.  A slowdown in activity is expected in the opening months of next year, however, as Easter (the other main consumption holiday in Europe) is late in 2019. In contrast to most other species, demand for tuna has not been good over the winter months in Europe and the United States of America and inventories are full, a combination which has seen prices of tuna raw material for canning fall drastically in December.
