European Price Report - January 2019

Year published: 2019

Economic weakening and general uncertainty are overshadowing the European seafood market. The trade war between China and the United States of America is having an impact on demand, while on the supply side the outlook for groundfish and cephalopod stocks is bleak. The resulting high prices are being met with consumer resistance.

The opening months of the year are generally a quiet period for the fish markets in Europe, and 2019 has been no exception so far. The delay in the arrival of Lent and Easter, which are typically periods of high seafood consumption, is expected to slow demand for fishery products in the first three months of the year and to put downward pressure on prices.
