European Price Report - February 2016

Year published: 2016

Monthly prices for about 600 fish products and an overview of the major trends on the European market, reported by an extensive correspondent network.

Abstract:

Consumption of fish and fishery products is generally strong during Lent, especially in the Catholic part of the continent. This year, however, Lent begins relatively early, conflicting with severe winter conditions in the North Sea and the Northern Atlantic as these fisheries are generally the main suppliers of seafood during this period. Excess demand will thus be satisfied by imports, especially of freshwater species from aquaculture such as tilapia and pangasius. Higher prices for fish products are likely, particularly in the week before Easter.
