European Price Report - June 2016

Year published: 2016

Monthly prices for about 600 fish products and an overview of the major trends on the European market, reported by an extensive correspondent network.

June 2016.

Abstract: Prices of seafood are trending upwards in expectation of strong summer sales, while traders are stocking for summer demand. The euro continues to strengthen, putting European importers into a good negotiating position. At the same time, prices for some species such as crab and European lobster have started to drop, as is typically seen at the opening of the season. The start of the summer period should also revive the canned tuna market, a popular product for use in salads during warm summer evenings. At the moment, however, demand for canned tuna is rather sluggish in the European market, despite lower prices for raw material. Arab countries are promoting fish consumption during Ramadan, which together with an overall decrease in economic activities during the fasting month will lead to less arrivals from Arab countries of fresh cephalopods and fresh finfish, particularly in the Spanish and Italian markets.
