The unusually high temperatures reached in Europe at the end of June have negatively impacted fish consumption and demand. Overall, prices trended downward, even throughout the holiday period when consumption of seafood is typically high. Tuna prices have dropped to their lowest level in four years, and canned tuna demand is reportedly very weak in the major markets, particularly in Europe.

Moderate demand is reported in seafood markets in both Europe and Asia, with seasonally average landings and average to lower-than-average price ranges. Prices for shrimp and tuna, in particular, have been trending steeply downwards. Summer is generally a period of high fish consumption, however, and this added demand combined with limited production is pushing up prices of squid and groundfish. 
European fish traders attended the Brussels Seafood Expo this month, the major industry event of the year. The dominant consumer trend at present is growing demand for more expensive convenience seafood products. In the shorter term, demand is good on the European market and landings are slow.
