GLOBEFISH - Información e Análisis Comercial en Pesquerias


According to FAO Near East fisheries data for 2003, the thirty two member countries as a group produced a total of 4.4 million tonnes of fish from all sources (marine and inland waters as well as catch and aquaculture). About 3.7 million tonnes (85 percent) of this production came from capture fisheries while the balance of 669 000 tonnes (15 percent) came from aquaculture in marine, brackish and fresh water bodies.
The study study describes the present state of the European freshwater fisheries industry, analysing the main species, such as carp, trout, eel, Nile perch, the catfish Pangasius, tilapia, northern pike, sturgeon, pike-perch and European perch, and all the European countries (EU-25 and other European countries). 
The study describes supply and demand for fresh and frozen groundfish products in Europe. It mainly focuses on the 15 countries that were members of the European Union before 2004 (EU15). Seven species have been chosen for the study, namely cod, pollock/Alaska pollock, saithe, haddock, redfish, hake and hoki, and the term “seven groundfish” is used to cover these species. 
The introductory chapters refer to the global situation and major trends of world marine capture fish production and the state of the world marine fishery resources. More detailed information is provided for each FAO statistical area, together with a discussion of the major trends and changes that have occurred with the main fishery resources exploited in each area and comments on the stock assessment work undertaken in support of fisheries management in each region.
