Kuxur rum agroforestry system against natural hazards in Guatemala

Intergrating agricultural production with agroforestry to build resilience during heat wave season in Ch’ortí region
28/03/2017

The rural population in the Eastern dry corridor of Guatemala is highly vulnerable to food insecurity. This territory, consisting of seven departments, has the highest population density and the highest rates of absolute poverty. Within these seven departments is the Ch’ortí Region, characterized by erratic rains, water constraints and low yields on traditional grain crops. The cultivation patches are located on dry slopes, approximately between 600 -1 000 meters above sea level. The soils are shallow, steep, stony and degraded by the intensive cultivation of corn, beans and sorghum, reducing their suitability for agriculture. It is in this context that a set of forestry management technology, a practice called “Kuxur rum” has been implemted in the Ch’ortí’ region.
