World Day Against Child Labour

WORLD DAY AGAINST CHILD LABOUR
12 June 2017, 11.00-12.00 - Sheikh Zayed Centre - FAO Headquarters, Rome

Around the world, one in four children grow up in areas affected by conflict or natural hazards. These vulnerable contexts push children into work that is unsuitable for their age in order to provide for themselves and their families. Today, millions of children in these areas are trapped in exploitative and dangerous work. As glum as it appears, the situation is becoming more and more problematic as conflicts persist in numerous areas around the world.

To draw attention to this growing issue, this year’s World Day Against Child Labour is dedicated to the impact of conflicts and disasters on child labour.

FAO will mark this day at its HQ. Daniel Gustafson, DDG, will open the event, and will host an interactive dialogue on how food security, nutrition and agricultural interventions in protracted and humanitarian crises can help to address child labour.

During the event, a pilot version of the Guidance note on Child Labour in Protracted Crises, Fragile and Humanitarian Contexts will be launched. This note provides technical and operational guidance to the agriculture, food security and nutrition programme implementers and formulators. Its aim is to enhance the sustainability of these programmes and to protect children from hazardous working conditions and activities that negatively affect their health, development and education.
