Improving the competitiveness of the onion value chain in Senegal

28 Feb 2018
On 6 and 7 December 2017, MAFAP and the Ministry of Trade of Senegal brought together the country’s horticulture sector to discuss contract farming and other reform measures to improve competitiveness of onion and other value chains.

The national workshop was attended by over 80 value chain stakeholders, policymakers, development partners, rural finance institutions and private operators. Encouraged by strong production growth in 2017, consensus emerged that the sub-sector has the potential to lead agriculture development in Senegal.

MAFAP has provided support to the Government for the adoption of comprehensive contract farming arrangements, in order to improve its quality and overall competitiveness vis-à-vis imported products. In addition, MAFAP provided the Government with a set of medium-term supporting measures to help the Market Regulation Agency of the Ministry of Trade in its efforts to boost growth in this strategic value chain. MAFAP and the Government of Senegal will pursue their partnership throughout 2018 to support evidence-based policy reforms and achieve the objectives of the Plan for an Emerging Senegal.
