Burkina Faso: Validation of MAFAP’s policy options to reduce the price of chemical fertilizers

13 Jun 2018
On June 7, 2018, MAFAP and the Ministry of agriculture and water facilities organized the validation workshop of the MAFAP study entitled "What policy actions to facilitate agricultural producers' access to chemical fertilizers at reduced prices in Burkina Faso? ".

The workshop brought together a wide range of stakeholders from the fertilizer sector: Ministry of agriculture and water facilities, Ministry of economy and finance, Ministry of trade, producer organizations, international organizations, financial institutions and others.

In order to reduce the price of fertilizer, the MAFAP study identifies regulatory measures as well as innovations in the subsidy programme, but also concrete proposals to reduce the cost of credit for input dealers and coordination mechanisms to harmonize transport costs. All the recommendations were validated by the participants during the workshop.

The recommendations proposing innovations in the subsidy mechanism will be further discussed within the working group set up by the Ministry of agriculture and water facilities, specialized agencies and donors in charge of reviewing the current subsidy programme in Burkina Faso. As for the other proposed measures including regulatory and logistics issues, a detailed roadmap will be developed jointly by MAFAP and the Ministry of agriculture and water facilities to identify the next steps and the institutions to be involved in the discussions for their effective implementation.
