Knowledge Tank for agriculture sectors’ adaptation to climate change

This NAP-Ag Knowledge Tank:

  • Contains tools, methods, case studies and other knowledge materials on climate change adaptation in the agriculture sectors (crops, livestock, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture).
  • Targets national planners, development actors and decision makers.
  • Supports countries in highlighting key resources for adaptation planning and budgeting, especially in formulating and implementing National Adaptation Plans (NAP).

MOSAICC is a tool for simulation designed to carry out inter-disciplinary climate change impact assessments on agriculture through simulations. It integrates four models: a statistical downscaling portal to downscale Global Circulation Models (GCM) data to weather stations networks, a hydrological model for estimating water resources for irrigation in major basins, two water balance-based crop models to simulate crop yields under climate change scenarios and a Computable General Equilibrium model (CGE) to assess the effect of changing yields on national economies. A data management system and a flexible and configurable system allow the users to upload data and run multiple models. The results from simulations by MOSAICC can be used by experts from national partner institutions but also by a wider audience of policymakers, scientists, students, civil society organizations, to raise awareness of the potential impacts of climate change and the need for adaptation. This simulation tools helps in laying the ground and formulating a Nation Adaptation Plan (NAP).

This study assesses the impact of medium to large scale natural hazards and disasters on the agriculture sector and subsectors in developing countries between 2003 and 2013, focusing on direct physical damage and indirect economic losses. The findings of the study are expected to support national and international efforts to reduce damage and losses caused by disasters and strengthen the resilience of the agriculture sector, in line with resilience targets set under the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Sustainable Development Goals, and the Universal Climate Change Agreement. It feeds in the stocktaking exercise, the assessment of needs and the climate vulerabilities analysis when developping a National Adaptation Plan (NAP).

This guidance document aims to assist investment project formulation practitioners in incorporating climate change considerations into agricultural investment projects and programmes. The main focus is on project/programme formulation (i.e. identification and design), although it contains also some aspects of supervision and evaluation. It is intended for national and international staff and consultants, as well as government staff involved in mobilizing investment for agriculture and rural development. It is meant to apply to investment projects or programmes in agriculture and rural development (agriculture in the broad sense, including fisheries, livestock and forestry). It can also be used for stand-alone climate change projects or programmes; however, for most stand-alone climate change projects/programmes, there are specific guidelines provided by their funding agencies and other development partners. It includes: 1) references to information (e.g. documents, tools and information systems) available in FAO and other agencies (mainly multilateral partners) which is relevant to agricultural and rural development projects or programmes; and 2) guidance on rapid assessments, possible options and good practices for mitigation, adaptation and disaster risk reduction (DRR).

This portal is a gateway to information on activities funded in developing countries to implement the Climate Change Convention. It aims to assist Parties in tracking the financial mechanism of the Convention and to inform the intergovernmental process under the UNFCCC and relevant stakeholders on the mobilization of resources to support developing countries in the implementation of adaptation and mitigation projects and other activities under the Convention. It comprises data from various sources including Party submissions, including on fast‐start finance as well as National Communications, information provided by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Adaptation Fund. This information is displayed in three dedicated modules, as well as an additional section for information related to the Adaptation Fund.

This report provides an overview of the cascading impacts of climate change on food security and nutrition, from physical impacts on agro-ecosystems to livelihoods and food security. It explore ways to reduce negative impacts through adaptation and resilience. As such, it also aims to answer the adaptation needs and demands conveyed by many countries in their Intended Nationally Determined Contributions for COP21.
