This paper provides an overview of national adaptation planning activity across OECD countries and identifies some of the emerging lessons that have been learnt from their experiences. The analysis draws on three main sources of information: a survey of countries’ national communications to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC); three country case studies (Mexico, England and the United States); and the results of a Policy Forum on Adaptation hosted by the OECD in 2012. It highlights key challenges and needs in the implementation of adaptation options, providing suggestions for adaptation planning.

Globally, climactic conditions are increasingly variable, and the intensity of their effects stronger. As climate change brings new uncertainties, risks and changes to already existing risks, building resilience is critical if the agriculture sectors are to adapt to climate change. In 2012, a joint FAO/OECD Workshop on “Building Resilience for Adaptation to Climate Change in the Agriculture Sector” addressed these issues in different agro-ecological and socio-economic contexts, and from different perspectives – biophysical, economic, and social and institutional. Workshop sessions questioned the notion of resilience and confronted concepts, policies, risk management strategies and case studies at various scales, from farm and household to national and global. This publication is a compilation of the summary and papers presented at the workshop, analysing among other things National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPAs) that paved the way toward medium- and long-term planning within NAPs.

This Toolkit provides step-by-step guidance in the design of measurable, verifiable, and reportable adaptation initiatives. It features advice on key information required, relevant sources, critical issues to consider, and examples that are relevant to designing a climate change adaptation initiative. It is targeted to a wide audience of practitioners who are called on to support the formulation of adaptation initiatives.

The EU-FAO "Food and Nutrition Security Impact, Resilience, Sustainability and Transformation"(FIRST) programme supports governments and their development partners in creating an enabling policy and institutional environment that is conducive to the achievement of SDG2. These Policy Guidance Notes series, ensure that policy makers have the support they need to understand how sectoral issues affect food security and nutrition and to recognise how to incorporate these considerations into their policies. It provides key inter-sectoral information to support adaptation planning.

Decisionmakers need improved tools in order to be better informed about trade-offs and synergies between different development and management choices, and to help them identify options on how to sustainably manage resources.This report proposes a way to carry out a water-energy-food nexus assessment approach in order to: a) understand the interactions between water, energy and food systems in a given context, and b) evaluate the performance of a technicalor policy intervention in this given context.The nexus assessment will inform nexusrelated responses in terms of strategies, policy measures, planning and institutional set-up or interventions and therefore feed in adaptation planning.

SNAP is a tool to assess, enhance, and monitor a country’s capacity for adaptation planning. This publication showcases the utility and use of the tool and highlights results from its application in various geographical terrains on national and subnational scale. The SNAP tool is one of the most widely used tools in GIZ’s armoury of support instruments for the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) process.

This publication highlights the importance and global priority of investing in sustainable mountain development for addressing the current challenges. It draws an overview of sustainable mountain development, focusing on: 1) mountains characteristics, risks and threats; 2) approaches to mountain management; 3) opportunities and challenges for future sustainable mountain development. It lays the ground and gives recommendations for addressing sustainable development when planning for adaptation in mountain areas.
