The next workshop of the Francophone Cluster of the Partnership for Transparency in the Paris Agreement (PATPA) is being jointly organized by the FAO MICCA and NAP-Ag teams in Douala, in Cameroon from 23-25 May 2018.

It will be the very first PATPA workshop focusing on adaptation.

Entitled “How to measure, monitor, evaluate and report on the progress in implementing climate change adaptation measures?”, the objective of the workshop is to sensitize and provide solid first basis in the monitoring and evaluation of adaptation measures to experts from Francophone countries.

The workshop will convene adaptation to climate change Experts from Ministries of twenty-five French-speaking countries (Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroun, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo, Djibouti, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Guinea, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Lebanon, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritiania, Morocco, Niger, Togo, Tunisia, Senegal, Seychelles).

Indeed, developing countries have prominently detailed their vulnerabilities to climate change and featured measures related to adaptation in their National Determined Contributions (NDCs). 90 percent of developing countries’ NDCs include adaptation measures in the agricultural sectors. National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) are a core vehicle to deliver on adaptation priorities, and towards achieving countries’ NDCs. Many countries have developed a National Adaptation Programme for Action (NAPA), some have or plan to elaborate a NAP, setting-up institutional frameworks to ensure the implementation of actions of adaptation actions.

While at the international level, the requirements for adaptation reports have not yet been clarified by the UNFCCC and will probably be part of the negotiations for the implementation of the Paris Agreement towards COP24, many countries have already expressed their wish to move forward and communicate their efforts, needs and progress in terms of implementing adaptation measures. The workshop is elaborated with a view to support these needs.

It will give the opportunity for countries to share experiences, lessons learned and best practices, in this field, provide them with a better understanding of the importance of monitoring and assessing the implementation of adaptation measures – from where to start to how to proceed- thus strengthening countries’ capacity needs.

Highly interactive, the workshop will combine both technical and working group sessions, aiming at providing a first solid practical understanding of monitoring and evaluation for adaptation measures to participants as well as networking opportunities between Francophone counterparts.
