Thailand and the need to adapt agriculture sectors to climate change – Ms. Chailanggar

Year published: 2016

Ms. Sairak Chailanggar, who works as Senior Economist in the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand, highlights the importance of agriculture sectors to be part of the National Adaptation Plans (NAP).

Agriculture sectors are very important to Thailand, and employs over fifty percent of people. Therefore climatic changes, which affect natural resources and conditions to produce food, have a strong impact, especially on small-scale farmers with a low adaptive capacity.

Ms. Chailanggar sees the main needs in assessing vulnerability of people and areas, and building the capacity of the people working in agriculture sectors.

Ms. Chailanggar expects that the NAP Process will help in drafting a comprehensive adaptation plan to move forward and include the people in Thailand. “NAP process will help us a lot.”

The FAO-UNDP “Integrating Agriculture in National Adaptation Plans (NAP-Ag)” Programme is working with Thailand, and other countries, to safeguard livelihoods and promote resilience.
