Regional Seminar on Agroecology in Latin America and the Caribbean

Brasilia, Brazil.
24-06-15 - 26-06-15

Representatives from South America, Central America, and the Caribbean; from the public, private and academic sectors as well as integration organizations, will participate in the Regional Seminar on Agroecology in Latin America and the Caribbean, to be held in Brasilia, Brazil.

At the end of the event, a reference document will be created with guidelines which mark the development of agroecology in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, which suggest future actions and which contribute to the discussion in the different forums for public policies in the region, such as: the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC); the Commission on Family Farming of MERCOSUR (REAF/MERCOSUR); the Parliamentary Front Against Hunger; the Caribbean Community (CARICOM); the Central American Integration System (SICA); and the Latin American Scientific Society of Agroecology (SOCLA), among others.

Recently, agroecology was included in the agenda of regional integration. The Regional Seminar on Agroecology forms part of the Plan of Action on Family Farming of CELAC. The XX Meeting of REAF Mercosur, held in Caracas in 2013, included the topic of agroecology in the agenda of the Thematic Groups for Adaptation to Climate Change and Climate Change Risk Management.

Participants in the seminar will include members of parliaments, governments and public institutions; civil society; family farming organizations (including agriculture, farming, forestry, fishing); cooperatives; organizations of consumers, indigenous peoples, women and youth associations. From the academic sector, representatives from universities and research centers will attend. Furthermore, representatives from organizations of regional integration and international cooperation will be invited.

The seminar is sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the Ministry of Agrarian Development of Brazil (MDA), the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (ECLAC), the Specialized Meeting on Family Farming of MERCOSUR (REAF / MERCOSUR) and the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Latin America and the Caribbean (Alliance); with the support of the Program of Cooperation Brazil-FAO.

Agroecology in a regional and global context

The seminar is based on a regional as well as global context of growing interest in agroecology, which is expressed in political platforms; experiences of production and public policies within the scope of the challenges to eradicate poverty, hunger and malnutrition; to achieve sustainable development; to promote the human right to healthy and adequate food; support the conservation of biodiversity; and the recognition and appreciation of family farming, knowledge of indigenous peoples and traditional communities.
