The Federal Institute of Santa Catarina (IFSC) - Campus Itajaí currently has an agreement with the Brazilian Navy to provide training courses for professional fishers and boat masters in the southern region of Brazil. In these courses, fishers, most of them already active, have classes such as navigation, salvage and legislation. Since 2017, the REBYC team from the Santa Catarina pilot, based at CEPSUL / ICMBio, has been promoting theoretical and practical lessons on the use of more selective gear in shrimp trawls, such as the use of bycatch reduction devices (BRDs). At these times it is possible to disseminate the importance of using these equipment, to instruct, in a qualified way, about the handling in the network and to find partners who identify in the devices benefits for their day to day on board.

After the course, it is possible for future fishers to maneuver and test the devices aboard the institution's school boat, broadening their vision and understanding of how these devices work and behave on the boat.

The classes are taught four times per semester and each class covers about 30 fishers’ students who will be professional Masters and Fishers who can disseminate the knowledge and importance of sustainable fishing in their communities.
