The overall impact of the project “Coherent Food Security Responses: Incorporating Right to Food into Global and Regional Food Security Initiatives” is an improved policy, social and institutional environment for good food security governance through the application of right to food principles and approaches.

In order to achieve this, the project addresses food security governance at two major levels:

  • the global governance mainly through the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) and other global entities;
  • the regional food security governance through existing and emerging regional and sub-regional efforts.

The project also addresses national food security governance by strengthening the response capacity of FAO to support countries in the implementation of the right to food and good governance practices.

Main outcomes

1. Strengthen global governance capacity to formulate and implement regional and national food security measures using the guiding principles of the right to food and basing such response measures on the Voluntary Guidelines for the Progressive Realization of the Right to Adequate Food in the Context of National Food Security.

  • Right to food support and guidance provided by the CFS’ platform.
  • Synthesis of best practices and lessons learned.

2. Strengthen the capacity of regional organizations and regional food security initiatives and programmes to advance the right to food.

  • Regional organizations have the capacity to effectively contribute to national capacities to formulate, plan, implement and monitor food security and nutrition policies, legislation, strategies, program s and projects that incorporate right to food principles and apply good governance practices.
  • FAO’s Right to Food Methodological Toolbox adapted to the needs of regions, and right to food and good governance training materials are developed.

3. Strengthen FAO’s response capacity to support developing countries in implementing the right to food and good governance practices in food security policies and programs.

  • Relevant FAO personnel at HQ and in decentralized offices are equipped to integrate the right to food in food security, nutrition and other relevant project.
  • Normative and methodological guidelines to integrate right to food and good governance in national policy formulation, sector planning and in food security program s and projects are developed, tested and implemented.
