Indigenous peoples can play a critical role in the fight against hunger, according to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Given their invaluable traditional knowledge, the FAO says indigenous peoples can be key partners in alleviating food insecurity, as well as the attainment of some of the other sustainable development goals. Veronica Reeves spoke with Yon Fernandez de Larrinoa, an FAO Advocacy Officer, and asked him what role indigenous peoples and communities can play in reaching the global goal on hunger. From the 3rd of November until tomorrow, more than 5,000 food professionals and up to 640 delegates belonging to 140 indigenous peoples are gathered in Shillong (India) celebrating their food culture and discussing ways to join their ancestral knowledge and expertise in sustainable food production. The Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition “FSN Forum” is an online venue for multi-stakeholder dialogue where policy decisions on food security and nutrition are collectively inspired, developed and linked with practice. The FSN Forum is facilitated by the Agricultural Development Economics Division (ESA) in FAO. FAO is actively collaborating with youth. Just last month at “Mobilizing Generation Zero Hunger”, a high level side event to the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit, the Director General encouraged young people to be the “Zero Hunger Generation” as the SDGs were formally adopted.
