World Food Safety Day: Everybody has a role to ensure safe food are available

06/06/2020

Today the world observed the World Food Safety Day which gained a momentum during Covid 19 pandemic where everyone has needed to pay extra attention to their food safety.

The pandemic has heightened  awareness about the need for personal hygiene, such as frequent hand washing, to avoid transmitting the virus, it has also reminded everyone that similar good hygiene practices are always needed in the preparation and handling of food.

Adding to that, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has urged countries to wholeheartedly continue with their efforts to improve food safety along agri-food chains.

“This year’s celebrations are dedicated to all those who have ensured that the crisis has not interrupted supply chains and that safe food remains available. From the workers in the fields to those in the supermarkets and to all those preparing food for others and themselves. Everybody has a role to play from farm to table to ensure the food we consume is safe, “ said Stephen Rudgard FAO Representative in Indonesia.

Under the theme “Food safety, everyone’s business”, the action-oriented campaign of World Food Safety Day this year by FAO and World Health Organization (WHO) is promoting global food safety awareness and calls upon countries and decision makers, the private sector, civil society, UN organizations and the general public to take action.

FAO will work together with the Government of Indonesia to improve food safety through better co-ordination Ministries and departments, developing a robust regulatory framework and assisting in the implementation of good practices from farm to fork.

FAO works with industry, farmers, value chain actors and NGOs to ensure safe food for consumers and to increase trade in agriculture commodities.
