The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has launched a new social media campaign, called "Forests as Pharmacy," to celebrate the International Day of Forests. The campaign aims to highlight the crucial role that forests play in providing plant-based medicines for the prevention and treatment of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), such as cancer, cardiovascular, and respiratory diseases. UNECE has created social media cards and infographics, available on their Trello board. Join the campaign to raise awareness of the invaluable role of forests in healthcare!

IUFRO's Global Forest Expert Panel (GFEP) on Forests and Human Health will host a webinar on March 21, where they will discuss the key messages of their latest assessment. There is growing evidence that nature, particularly forests, contributes to physical and mental well-being and can notably improve human health

Join the Mediterranean Youth Task Force (MYTF) of Silva Mediterranea and the World Food Forum on 23 March at 16.30-17.30 CET for the webinar in honour of the International Day of Forests. This session aims to showcase the restorative and therapeutic potential of forests in our fast-paced and stressful world. Keynote speaker Professor Laura Secco will present on forests and health, followed by presentations from young researchers Dr. Aynur Mammadova and Aisling Sealy Phelan from the University of Padova.

Algeria: National forest celebrations

Algeria celebrates International Day of Forests with a rich and varied programme led by the Directorate General of Forests and its branches. The celebrations included the National Institute of Forestry Research, and the National Agency for Nature Conservation. One of the highlights is an event at the Specialized Technological Institute of Training of Algiers, organized by the Directorate General of Forests in partnership with FAO and the Ministry of National Solidarity, Ministry of Health, ITSFA of Algiers, Test Garden, and other UN agencies including WFP and UNFPA.

Capacity building in Australian forestry, forest products and carbon; women in community forestry and research into forests, human and ecological health and forest fires were some of the topics discussed online on the International Day of Forests in Australia.

The GNTDD-BENIN, a civil association focused on sustainable forest management and certification, aims to celebrate the International Day of Forests on March 21 with several events including public lectures on Web TV Challenge, which will be shared in newspapers such as Décryptage Info, Libération, and le Potentiel.

The School of Forest Sciences, the Bolivian Youth Community of WWF, and the Forest and Environmental Communicators Network of Latin America will organize two events in celebration of the Day. The first will be a series of educational activities at Parque Demetrio Canelas from 9.00-13.00 in Cochabamba. The second event is a talk on the role of forests in human health and well-being, held at Casona Santivañes from 18.30-20.30, Cochabamba.

The Bulgarian Forestry Agency now has a permanent exhibition located in the Educational and Experimental Farm in Jundola, which showcases the history and development of the forestry department, forestry education, and science. The exhibition will be presented for the first time on March 21, 2023, on the International Day of Forests. Contributions to the exhibition, such as documents, photos, literature, objects, tools, uniform signs, and awards related to the history of forestry in Bulgaria, are welcome through the magazine "Forest" or the press centre of the Forestry Executive Agency.

Cameroon: How to set up a tree nursery

The Multipurpose Training Center of Mbouo Bandjoun trains young people in organic agropastoral entrepreneurship. On the Day they organized fruit tree planting, training on how to set up a fruit tree nursery and awareness-raising workshops on forests and health.

Organized by the L'Association Communautaire pour le Développement et le Bien-Etre, more than a hundred students and staff at Tcheutchoua Modern College of Bafoussam III, West Cameroon, planted trees and learnt about the importance of the forest for human health and the environment.

China, Nanjing: Middle School art exhibition

Basis International School Nanjing celebrated the Day by organizing an art exhibition with the theme of Forests and Health featuring artwork created by the PK1-G12 students and will also celebrate IDF by wearing green on 21 March.

China, Shanghai: Forest ecosystem quiz and events

Yanfeng Plastic Omnium Automotive Exterior Systems Co., Ltd. celebrated International Day of Forests at company headquarters by running an event, at their supply chain and through on-line quiz to let more people know the importance of forest ecosystems and to call on more people to protect forests and biodiversity. A total of 3,683 people from all over the world participated in the event.

The southernmost city in Chile celebrates the Day with a community fair, with tree giveaways, environmental stalls and products made by local artisans who use forest resources respectfully. Children (0-5 years) will visit a native forest in the city to learn about the importance of caring for their environment. Organized by the National Forestry Corporation, Cape Horn International Center, and the Floresta Foundation, with the support of the Municipality of Cabo de Hornos.

Radio Taíno in Cuba celebrated the International Day of Forests by featuring a special segment on science, technology, and the environment. The segment highlights the importance of forests for maintaining good health and the need to protect them.

The Finnish Forest Association has been involved in the My Tree/Minun puuni planting project for over 30 years which encourages elementary schools and early childhood education centers in the Helsinki region to grow pine seedlings from seeds on their windowsills. The project and these initiatives demonstrate the importance of engaging young people in forest conservation efforts.

Ghana: Regentropfen College of Applied Sciences launches greening project

The Regentropfen College of Applied Sciences launched a greening project on campus. The project involved planting trees to enhance vegetation for the apiary and combat climate change. Students and staff from the Department of Agriculture joined hands to plant trees and, with the support of donors, a solar-powered borehole was installed to provide water. The trees will serve as a source of food and medicine for the local community. The project also aims to create evergreen forests to provide shade and safe habitats for animals, bees and birds.

The PRAXIS Organisation and the UNESCO Club of Serres organize a campaign PLANT A TREE, PLANT A HOPE to support forests and show the impact of degradation on the environment. This year, the PRAXIS Organisation and youth volunteers gathered with local people to plant more than 60 trees in Serres, Greece.

A special conference was held at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences focusing on the multiple relationships between forest and health. The speakers including government officers, healthcare representatives, church officials as well as forestry and economics researchers. Presentations focused on the role of forests in human physical, mental and spiritual health, in the health of the economy, and explained the threats to the health of forests in a changing environment.

India, Jaipur: Students learn about environmental sustainability and the role of forests

The Department of Geography at Kanoria PG Mahila Mahavidyalaya, in collaboration with Shree Kalptaru Sansthan, organized student discussions and a talk with Shri Vishnu Lamba (Treeman of India) and the President Shree Kalptaru Sansthan on the role of forests in environmental sustainability and human health. Students wrote poems and articles to win cash prizes.

India, Firozabad: Village activities to learn about the importance of trees

The importance of trees and their roles in maintaining groundwater levels, biodiversity conservation, medicines, food, fodder and wood were shared with the villagers of Farol Nagariya. Villagers organised an Anti-Deforestation Red Tape Movement by tying red tape on trees to deliver the message to save trees and forests.

India, Jhansi: Forests and health discussion

Rani Lakshmi Bai Central Agricultural University (RLBCAU) is hosting an event on 21 March at 4.00 pm under the theme ‘Forests and Health’. Hosted by the College of Horticulture and Forestry, the event will begin with a welcome address from Dr. M. J. Dobriyal, followed by a thematic address from Dr. V. P. Singh. The event will also include the announcement of student activity results

India, Kolkata: Celebrate the Day at the Birla Industrial & Technological Museum

Join the Birla Industrial & Technological Museum (BITM) in Kolkata, a unit of National Council of Science Museums, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, to commemorate the International Day of Forestry on March 21, 2023, starting from 10:30 am at the BITM premises. The event will include sapling distribution, an open-house quiz, and a film show. Don't miss the chance to participate in these exciting activities and celebrate the crucial role of forests in our lives.

ReGro Earth, a sustainability-focused organization, is hosting a cleanup event to raise awareness about the importance of mangroves and their role in mitigating the effects of climate change. In celebration of International Day of Forests, over 500 volunteers will gather at the mangroves area at Carter Road, Mumbai, India to remove plastic waste and plant 5,000 mangrove saplings. The event will be attended by celebrities, political leaders, and government officials.

The College of Forestry will celebrate the Day by holding a quiz, painting and drawing competition, and other events that showcase the importance of maintaining a healthy forest ecosystem. Check out the circular on the university's website for more information.

India, Odisha: Workshops to raise awareness of forest fires and their impact on wildlife

Indian environmentalist Subhransu Satpathy conducted workshops in schools and around villages on the International Day of Forests to raise awareness of forest fires and their effects on wildlife. The environmentalist won the World Environment Day Hero Award in 2019. He distributed more than 35,000 terracotta water containers for thirsty birds and created more 100,000 seed balls to help green the planet.

India, Tamil Nadu: College quiz and tree planting

The Tamil Nadu Forest Department, Theni Forest Division and Aundipatti Range organized a quiz for college students and planted trees on the college campus.

India, Telangana: Tree planting, rally and using eco-friendly coconut shell plant pots

Botany students and Ecoclub volunteers planted saplings of Tamarindus, Azadirachta, Pithecellobium and Sapindus at the Reserve forest of Jagannadhapuram. The saplings were raised at J.V.R Government College and Sathupally Botanical Garden nursery in eco-friendly coconut shells.  Using coconut shells is an environmental-friendly alternative to raising plants in plastic containers.

India, Uttar Pradesh: Tree planting, quiz and nature photography

The College of Horticulture and Forestry celebrated the International Day of Forest 2023 by holding tree plantings, a quiz, posters and nature photography to exhibit the importance of forest for better health.

Two events will be held on March 21 and 22 by the Forest State Guards and the Universita Politecnica delle Marche. The events aim to promote change to solve the global water crisis and celebrate the International Day of Forests. The events will be held from 9.00 to 11.30 at the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences, and are aimed at high school students. Journalist Veronique Angeletti will moderate the discussion.

The "Woods and forests health" workshop is the first of six nature-based workshops for primary school kids to be held on Thursday, 30 March 2023 at 14:30 at the G. Canepari Afterschool Learning Center in Pecetto di Valenza, Italy. Using storytelling, this workshop will focus on the importance of preserving forests with a chance to learn about the Piedmont regional forests.

Green Earth for the Future will be held at Umi-no-Mori Park (Koto-Ku, Tokyo), reclaimed land in Tokyo Bay. The event will be held in conjunction with the pre-opening event of the Park, and volunteers are being sought to care for the trees that have been planted. The Kenya Forest Service cordinated tree planting activities during the celebrations of International Day of Forests at the Coast where 9,700 seedlings were planted in Tana River,Lamu and Taita Taveta counties. A total of 200 ceremonial seedlings were also planted in Garissa County during the celebrations.

Kenya, Nairobi: Forest walks and environmental discussions

Ona Africa Kenya Ltd and Midland Adventures are part of a green initiative to plant 9 million trees within Kenya. On the Day, they organized walks in forests and parks within the city of Nairobi and environmental discussions to raise awareness of the need for climate action and tree planting activities.

Organized by the Forestry Development Authority of Liberia in collaboration with partner institutions, nearly 50 local students marched through the main streets of Buchanan city to raise awareness on the importance of protecting the country’s forests and its health benefits. Several local radio channels aired talk shows.

The Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro held a virtual conference for students and the general public  on the International Day of Forests.

The Governor of Monterrey, Samuel Garcia, and the Secretary of Environment will lead the start of the Bosques Ciudadanos program, aimed at massive reforestation in different cities of the metropolitan area. The event will take place on March 21. In another event organized by the same department, winners of an Instagram contest will participate in a forest bathing therapy session on March 26.

Join online New Zealand's leading independent conservation organization on March 21 at 7:30pm (NZDT) to hear from an exciting panel of speakers including Senior Research Fellow and ANFT Certified Forest Therapy Guide, Dr Geoffrey Handsfield; Rongoā Māori Practitioner, Rob McGowan; and Forest & Bird Conservation Manager and Forest correspondent, Dean Baigent-Mercer.

Nigeria: Symposium on healthy forests for healthy people

The Savanna Forestry Research Station of the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria organized a symposium with the theme, ‘Healthy Forests for Healthy People’. The event convenor, Mr. Olaifa Rashid Kolawole, spoke at the event, which took place at the Savanna Forestry Research Station Conference Hall in the city of Zaria, Nigeria.

Nigeria, Abuja: Tree planting and student talks

The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development partnered with the Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Protection, Abuja Flowers, the Nursery and Landscaping Association and the Department of Climate Change, Federal Ministry of Environment, to visit two public secondary schools and plant 20 economic trees - cacao, avocado and almond trees.


Elverum, Norway, will celebrate the Day on the evening of March 21, with an open invitation to enjoy the city forest, to share a meal by the community campfire, and to learn about trees, forests and health. The hosts, Visitor Centre Forest and Anno Norwegian Forest Museum, are joined by partners working in forestry, nature protection and recreation. Programme in Norwegian.

Pakistan, Bhimber: Tree planting at the district hospital

The Forest Department Bhimber Azad Jammu and Kashmir organized a successful event at the District Headquarters Hospital Bhimber with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of forests for health and well-being. Activities included a tree planting ceremony and awareness sessions.

Paraguay, Asunción: Celebrating the VIII Forestry Week

To celebrate International Day of Forests, the Forestry Engineering Career of the National University of Asuncion will hold the VIII Forestry Week, to be developed through seminars, thematic fairs and meetings with members of the Paraguayan forestry sector.

Peru, Carabayllo: Planting trees to raise community awareness

Students of environmental engineering at the University Cesar Vallejo participated in a reforestation programme with 150 species of Tara seedlings at Lomas de Primavera in the district of Carabayllo to raise awareness in the community about the management and conservation of natural resources.

Peru, Valle Alto Huallaga: technical and social events

In the Peruvian Amazon, the Forest Management Committee of Alto Huallaga and tributaries - CGBAHA, organized an inter-institutional, multisectoral and intercultural discussion on the "Sustainable management of the upper Huallaga forests, threats and strengths" on 21 March. With the participation of local people and students of the Forestry Engineering Department of the Universidad Nacional Agraria de la Selva - UNAS.

Philippines: Tree seedling bank opens for reforestation in Palawan

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (Western Command) vows to contribute to reforestation efforts in Palawan and opens a tree seedling bank to propagate 50,000 tree seedlings in 2023.

AFoCO, in partnership with the Korea Forest Service and Sejong National Arboretum, celebrated the 2023 International Day of Forests on 21 March 2023 through a ceremonial tree-planting event at Sejong National Arboretum.

The IAU school in Meghion KHMAO-Ugra, Russia, celebrated the International Day of Forests by organizing food eco-lessons and conservation activities for students in grades 1-5. Led by Galina Mikhaylovna Sbitneva, volunteers taught the importance of preserving forests and its impact on food sustainability. The event was attended by 444 students. The volunteers also prepared a presentation promoting awareness of the significance of forests and their conservation.

Russian Federation, Nizhnevartovsk: School Forest Day

Students learnt about the importance of forests in Russia on Forest Day and collected a record amount of waste paper.

Saudi Arabia celebrated the International Day of Forests 2023 on 20-21 March with a series of events and media products organized by the General Directorate of Forests at the National Centre for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC) in Saudi Arabia.

Employees of the Pet Products Trading Company in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, took part in a planting campaign to mark the International Day of Forests, planting more than 100 saplings in the desert.

The Technical University in Zvolen organized an event titled "Slovak forests and their resilience to forest fires" to celebrate the International Day of Forests. The event aims to raise awareness about the challenges and importance of protecting forests from fires. This initiative highlights the need for greater attention and efforts to preserve and protect forests in Slovakia.

The National Forest Centre organized educational workshops for over 25 teachers and 123 kindergarten and primary school children. A student competition was held in the Forestry and Wood Museum in Zvolen. 

Basoa Fundazioa is hosting an event on the sustainable management of forests. The event will take place on 24 March, in Artziniega (Araba), Spain, and will feature a documentary film on silvicultural practices and wood utilization and transportation processes, followed by a conversation between several experts. Attendees can participate in the event live or via their YouTube channel, where part of the event will be broadcast. Espacio Luzarra is hosting a forum on 17 March at 19.30 CET to learn about the world of trees and their importance in our lives. Experts in botany and forestry will reveal the amazing secrets that lie behind the complex ecosystems of forests, and how they sustain our planet's biodiversity.

At 11 am Saturday March 18 at the Town Hall square, six different native tree species will be available to the general public for free. In addition, children aged 4-5 years can participate in other activities at the Environmental Department of Castro-Urdiales City Hall where they can transplant their own tree into a pot and take it home.

Spain, Extremadura: Sustainable Gardening Collaborative plants trees

The Sustainable Gardening Collaborative of Guijo de Galisteo in Extremadura is celebrating the International Day of Forests by planting two threatened species trees, Prunus Lusitania, in the municipal park of Batan. The goal is to create healthier spaces for people and demonstrate their commitment to preserving the natural heritage and promoting sustainability in their community.

Spain, Jérica: School students raise awareness of forest conservation

The IES JÉRICA-VIVER (Castellón) school celebrated the International Day of Forests 2023 by organizing a student-led exhibition about Mediterranean forests and the need to preserve them. A field trip was organized to study the natural vegetation of the local landscape. These initiatives aim to educate the students about the significance of forests and their conservation.

Spain, Madrid: Students connect with nature and conservation in Chapinería's oak forests

CEIPS Santo Ángel de la Guarda celebrated the special day by connecting with nature and the oak forests of Chapinería. The event was attended by students of all ages and their families. It included relaxation sessions, reflection on the benefits of natural spaces and conservation efforts. The event culminated in artistic works made with natural materials, expressing what the existence of forests means to each attendee.

The forest sector platform (Juntos por los Bosques), the Ministry in charge of forestry (MITECORD) and the hosting city of Andalucía, Ronda have organized an event on March 24 -26 featuring talks and presentations by renowned experts in forestry, as well as interactive workshops and guided tours of local forests. Overall, the programme promises to be an inspiring and informative celebration of the vital role that forests play in our world.

Parcemasa celebrates the Day by planting quercus rubra (red oak) trees as a reminder of the importance of responsibility and commitment to the health of the planet and to raise awareness of the need to minimize our ecological footprint. The event will be attended by Professor Angel Enrique Salvo Tierra, Department of Botany and Forestry, UMA, and the President of Parcemasa, Francisco Cantos.

High school students from IES Julio Rodriguez in Motril, Granada, produced a video to celebrate International Day of Forests. The students included important messages and the campaign slogan of this year: "Healthy Forests, Healthy People." The video was created to raise awareness of the importance of forests in maintaining a healthy planet.

Türkiye: Student poster exhibition ‘Save the Forests for Future Generations’

The Tarabya Final School in Istanbul organized an exhibition of posters designed by students with the theme ‘Save the Forests for Future Generations.’ The winner received a certificate and three tree saplings, which will be planted by Tema Vakfı in Sivas Memorial Forest.

United Kingdom: All-Party Parliamentary Group on Forestry and Tree Planting meeting

The UK parliament will hold a breakfast meeting on 21 March at 8:30 am (GMT) in the Churchill Room. Forestry Minister Trudy Harrison MP will set out how a new relationship between the government and UK forest-based industries can create a domestic partnership with international impact. Friends of the Earth, Confor and the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission will discuss how more domestic tree planting can support net zero objectives, stimulate rural economies and help protect forests overseas. Attendees will also hear about the upcoming launch of the National Wood Strategy for England.

The Heart of England Forest held a guided walk to see the hidden forests of Warwickshire. Heart of England is creating and conserving the largest new native broadleaf forest in England for people and wildlife.·

For 2023, the Minnesota Forestry Association will again host Minnesota Forestry Day in concert with International Day of Forests on March 21, 2023 at the Minnesota State Capitol. 

The Arbor Day Foundation have some ideas to help you get the celebration started. Here’s a list of 150 ways you can celebrate trees and nature on the International Day of Forests or other forest days.

Venezeula: Tree planting and student activities

The Captain Santos Rescue Group organized an educational session at the Loma del Pueblo Educational Unit and planted 8 fruit trees with the support of the public library Professor José Ramón Gallegos de Tabay.  

The General Department of Forestry, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations organized a forum for the International Day of Forests. The event recognized the important role of forest resources and mobilized local stakeholders, the international community and students to identify future options to increase conservation action and responsible use of forest resources and services.

Zimbabwe commemorated the Day in Muzarabani. Muzarabani is a forest biodiversity-rich area with vast mopane woodlands that have been benefiting communities for generations. In addition, the area has a potential to benefit communities with further developed forest value chains which include apiculture and honey processing as well as harvesting and commercialization of indigenous fruits like Masawu, mauyu (baobab) and various other non-timber forest products.
