I am under 18, can I enter the contest?
No, unfortunately only people aged 18 or over can enter the contest.
Is there an entry fee?
No, entering the contest is free of charge.
Can I send my video directly to FAO?
No – no file transfers will be accepted. Participants must submit their own video entries via their personal YouTube accounts, including the #MountainsMatter
hashtag in the title, but their entry will only be considered eligible when they submit the link through a form on the website [LINK], including the details requested.
Can I enter my video in both the general and professional categories?
No, you need to choose one category to enter.
Can I submit a video I made a few years ago?
No, videos must have been taken within twelve months of the date of entry.
What format should my video be in?
The video can be produced with any professional or non professional device (smartphone, tablet, video camera). The image quality must be in High Definition (HD) or in Standard Definition (SD). Both are common image quality standards, which are usually provided in cameras and smartphones after the year 2000.
What genre of video will you accept?
The video can explore the theme from any perspective and any “genre" (documentary, video art, narrative or cinematographic video). It can have audio or be silent.
What languages can I use for my video?
English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese and Russian. If another language is spoken in the video, it should be translated into one of these six languages. Translating it as a voice over or in form of subtitles (if technically feasible) is highly recommended. Specific meanings of words and sentences of local languages/dialects, or slang, should be explained in any of the six languages specified. Subtitles, if used, should be placed within the lower third of the picture (video frame) and in white color over a black bar. Text can only be in English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese and Russian.
Can my video be longer than one minute?
No, videos over one minute will be disqualified.
Can I use someone else’s music or footage in my video?
The video must be the original work of the participant. Any material under copyright (footage, still photography, music, text, audio) should not be used without prior permission of the copyright holder.
Can I submit a video that I’ve submitted to another contest?
Videos should not have received previous awards and must not be in use by anyother organization.
When and how will winners be notified?
Winners will be notified by email by 10 November 2017. The winners will be announced officially on 11 December on this website and through FAO social media channels.
