The Initiative on Soaring Food Prices has been active in more than 90 countries worldwide for a total value of about USD 449 million. Of this, over USD 37 million was funded through FAO’s Technical Cooperation Programme, USD 314 million through the EU Food Facility and the rest by other donors.
In most countries, FAO has provided quality seeds, fertilizers, tools and equipment to help vulnerable farmers boost their food production and improve their livelihoods.
FAO is working with governments to build up rural infrastructure, promote sustainable agricultural practices and improve farmers' access to technical assistance, training, credit and markets.
The overall aim is to strengthen food security over the long run as well as farmers' ability to withstand future climate or market shocks.
FAO is also providing policy advice and monitoring global, regional and domestic food prices.
The Country Information pages give an overview of the situation in each country, FAO’s response, projects funded through the EU Food Facility, other FAO activities and contributions received.
FAO, in cooperation with partners of the UN High-Level Task Force, carried out a series of inter-agency assessments and rapid appraisals in nearly 60 countries from 2008 to 2009. The findings of these assessment missions are also available on the country pages.
