The Global Record Working Group provides guidance on the way forward

25/02/2015

25 experts of member States of and observers to the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) convened in Rome, 23–25 February 2015, at the first meeting of the Global Record Informal Open-Ended Technical and Advisory Working Group.

The experts agreed that the Global Record fulfils a crucial role as a tool to fight IUU fishing in support of a variety of existing binding and voluntary fisheries instruments; that the function of the Global Record is not restricted to that of an authorized list of vessels; that the Global Record should include authorization, compliance and historical data, most of which should be in the public domain; that States are responsible for providing information to the Global Record; that core specialized working groups should be established to deal with particular matters, mainly at the technical level; and that a pilot version of the Global Record should be developed.

The Report of the Global Record Informal Open-Ended Technical and Advisory Working Group is available here.
