Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing

Latin America and Caribbean network increases information exchange to fight IUU fishing

15/06/2018

The Network for the Exchange of Information and Shared Experiences between Latin American and Caribbean countries to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU fishing, has launched its official Web site to further exchange information to fight illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The Web site was officially launched on the 5 June 2018, on the occasion of the first International Day for the fight against IUU fishing.

The Network sees the active participation of Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama and Peru together with the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico and Uruguay as well as Spain.

The Network was set up in October 2017 following a request by Latin American and Caribbean countries to FAO to ease the process to develop a mechanism to simplify the exchange of information and experiences to fight IUU fishing.

Peru offered its contribution to assume the Secretariat of the Network and, in close collaboration with the FAO, developed the new Web site which can be accessed here.

The new Web site facilitates contact between countries to access IUU fishing-related information; provides information about the legal framework of the different countries to fight IUU fishing; links International Instruments such as the Agreement on Port State Measures and the Global Record of Fishing Vessels, Refrigerated Transport Vessels and Supply Vessels (Global Record); and links lists of RFMOs and other resources.
