Technical Consultation proposes recommendations for Global Record project

The FAO Technical Consultation To Identify A Structure And Strategy For The Development And Implementation Of The Global Record Of Fishing Vessels, Refrigerated Transport Vessels and Supply Vessels (Technical Consultation), that met in Rome (8 – 12 November 2010), arrived at eleven recommendations to propose to the twenty-ninth session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) which will be held next year.

Principal recommendations were:

  • that the FAO proceeds with a phased implementation of the Global Record programme over an eight-year period;
  • that the programme should be launched as soon as possible as a voluntary initiative;
  • that COFI requests FAO to work with member countries to identify administrative arrangements for the introduction and implementation of the programme’s first phase;
  • that the provision of UVI numbers to all vessels which will be included in the programme, will be entrusted to a competent body, while separate criteria for smaller vessels will be developed.
