A mission of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, took place between 2 and 6 of March to continue assisting the Fisheries Administration of the Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) in reviewing the Fisheries Law from 2006.

The mission aimed at presenting and discussing the proposed amendments to the draft fisheries law based on best international practice and taking into account the specific context of Cambodia.

It follows an earlier mission in August last year during which a gap assessment of the draft fisheries law was undertaken.

The drafting of the new fisheries law is being conducted with the involvement of different development partners and in consultation with relevant national stakeholders.

The process is under the framework of the Cambodia Programme for Sustainable and Inclusive Growth in the Fisheries Sector: Capture component (CAPFISH-Capture), funded by the European Union.

The FAO CAPFISH-Capture Project is providing complimentary technical support to the Fisheries Administration for the finalization of the new fishery law.

The enactment of the new law is a key target requirement for continued EU support to the Fisheries Administration.

On 6 December 2019, Cambodia became a Party to the Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate IUU Fishing (PSMA), which came into force on 5 June 2016.

On 28 February 2020, the Kingdom of Cambodia also deposited its instrument of accession to the Agreement for the Implementation of the Provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982 relating to the Conservation and Management of Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks (UNFSA), which came into force on 11 December 2001.
