Data bases, fact sheets, poetry...
This web site was launched on 12 July 2000 with basic information on the International Year of Mountains. But we have much more in store. In the months ahead, we plan to build a web site that will make a lasting contribution both to IYM 2002 and to the long-term objective of sustainable mountain development. Look out for these coming features:
- IYM resources, designed to help people, institutions and governments prepare for the International Year
- Mountain library, containing links to on-line repositories and reference databases on mountain conservation and development
- Mountain topics, describing key aspects of the world's mountains - from land, biodiversity and farming systems to tourism, culture and conflicts in mountain areas
- Mountain profiles, a database of physical, social, economic and cultural information on the world's major mountains and mountain ranges
- Mountain life, describing the language, art and customs of mountain peoples. It will include a gallery of mountain art, downloadable music, book reviews and poetry
- Mountain recreation, covering mountain sports, major mountain tourist attractions, and the practice of ecotourism ("leave only footprints")
- Mountain schoolroom, with downloadable kits for teachers on specific mountain topics, and quizzes and competitions for children
- Mountain report, monthly profiles of successful development initiatives in mountain communities around the world
