Strengthening the social protection, food security and nutrition of students in the Bahamas

05/01/2018

The Bahamas National School Feeding Committee with intersectoral representation from the Ministries of Health, Education, Agriculture, and Social Services is being considered following recommendations from a High Level and Technical Workshop held in December 2017. The Committee is a result of discussions held under the FAO supported project on “Assessing the National School Feeding Programme in The Bahamas”. While discussions on the proposal for laws or policies for the national school feeding programme (SFP) continue to take place, the formation of the Committee has already been mandated by Cabinet.

FAO has also conducted an assessment of the national school feeding programme in eight primary and six high schools in the Bahamas. Stakeholder consultations with various ministries, school administrators, teachers, parents, health workers, agricultural extension officers, farmers, fishermen and community leaders have also taken place. Additionally, the need for a programme that addresses the high level of obesity in the country and the level of food importation have also been raised as priority focus areas for the upcoming years.
