Fostering competitive value chains in The Bahamas

Mr Allister Reynold Glean addressing participants
10/07/2018

Small-scale producers in The Bahamas have long faced the challenge of being able to capitalize on market opportunities and meet market entry requirements. The lack of proper governance for the group and a roadmap for their success have been at the crux of the matter.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) held a workshop to build the capacity of producer groups in governance in order to leverage their participation in value chains. The workshop, facilitated by International Specialist in Agribusiness and Value Chains, Mr Allister Reynold Glean, exposed farmers and producer groups to the importance of strategic planning in their operations. The groups were introduced to strategic planning techniques, the development of roadmaps for implementing plans, the business model canvas and how to develop a framework to prioritize and inform the development of their goals.

The training was held from June 28-29, 2018 and is expected to help farmers and producer better engage in market activities and develop a road map for their success.
