FAO offers Emergency Response to The Bahamas following Hurricane Dorian

On September 1, 2019, The Bahamas was hit by Hurricane Dorian, a Category 5 storm.

Abaco and Grand Bahama, two major islands of the Commonwealth experienced the catastrophic impacts of this hurricane and approximately seventy thousand people were impacted. While the approximate death toll at the time of this posting stands at 70, authorities have advised that this number is expected to increase as there are approximately two hundred (200) persons still unaccounted for.

Upon the request of the Bahamas, FAO provided assistance with the post disaster needs assessments, impact on livelihoods and assistance with rehabilitation programmes. FAO continues to offer assistance to the country particularly due to the agriculture, fisheries and forestry sectors being significantly impacted.

FAO will continue to provide assistance to support the country as it rebuilds these sectors.
