Strategic Approach to Information and Communication in Support of Poverty Reduction and Food Security

FAO and the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) have examined the role of information and communication in support of livelihoods, also with a view to improving the impact of FAO's information and its expertise in information and knowledge systems on the enhancement of food security and the reduction of poverty.

The context for such an approach was investigated in three case study countries (Ghana, India and Uganda). KCE and the Sustainable Development Department's Communication for Development Group collaborated on this activity.

The Overseas Development Institute (ODI) provided technical inputs in the form of a desk study and other working papers arising from the field missions.

More information about this study can be found on the LIVELIHOODS web site.

FAO is currently working with DFID and the World Bank on the next phase of this study, the output of which will be a common framework and approach for rural information and communications at the policy and operational levels.

The study will further existing collaboration, and will draw on the experience of the World Bank and FAO in Agricultural Knowledge and Information Systems (AKIS) and on all three partners' experience with Poverty Reduction Strategy Plans (PRSP).
