What does FAO do? :: Social justice

In a world where there’s plenty of food for everyone, hunger is not only unnecessary – it is unjust.

This injustice seems maddeningly obvious, doesn’t it? Everyone has the right to live, no? Everyone needs food to live, right? Then everyone has a right to food, no?

That’s what FAO, and the entire United Nations, believes. Every country in the world has endorsed the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Here’s what article 25 of the Declaration says:

“Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services…”
Sounds like a good idea doesn’t it?

FAO has been advocating for the right to food – not just as a good idea but as a legal reality. Find out more about the right to food.

But we won’t be able to end the injustice of hunger unless we also ensure that the poor and hungry enjoy other basic human rights. To find out what FAO is doing to promote human rights and social justice, visit these pages:
