What problem did it address, where?
SEAGA helps to strengthen socio-economic and gender analysis capacities at regional, national and local levels. Through the participatory identification, collection and use of gender disaggregated socio-economic information, people working in the agricultural and rural development sector are better able to understand the constraints and opportunities faced by rural women and men and to assist rural people to improve their livelihoods. Socio-economic and gender analysis information is also essential to inform and guide policies, programmes and projects that can provide responses to current development challenges.
SEAGA workshops have been held in 73 countries so far.
How?
SEAGA provides training services on the concepts, methods and tools for conducting socio-economic and gender analysis, through workshops and training of trainers workshops at national, regional and international levels. The training workshops have different duration and target groups, according to the specific needs of the requesting country/ies or institution. For each training activity the material is adapted to the specific context and technical needs. The basic idea of the programme is to train national trainers to be in a position to train others, thus producing a multiplying effect and ensuring sustainability. SEAGA also organizes short sensitization sessions raise awareness on gender issues among decision and policy-makers at management and middle-levels.
Where next?
The SEAGA package is easily adapted to national and regional realities and consists
- Basic documents: a reference guide and handbooks for the macro, intermediate and field levels;
- Training materials: a training of trainers manual and training modules for workshops;
- Technical guides covering issues such as irrigation, livestock, the project cycle, microfinance, household resource management, emergency and rehabilitation operations, addressing HIV/AIDS through the natural resource sectors and gender-disaggregated data;
- Information and communication material (brochure, leaflet, CD-ROM, web page and e-mail address).
SEAGA established and reinforced links with national and international organizations (governmental, NGOs and research institutions) for the joint organization of training activities, training materials and guidelines preparation, and provision of advisory services to follow-up on training activities. SEAGA also works closely with other FAO technical units in developing technical guides and other training material.
