Publishing of digital assets
We provide assistance and support throughout the process of uploading, editing and publishing FAO documents and publications, as well as selected non-FAO publications.
FAO’s digital information and knowledge assets are currently stored in the Corporate Document Repository but this repository system is going to be replaced by the new FAO Open Archive.
The FAO Open Archive is a digital repository that will manage all official FAO publications, integrating both cataloguing and electronic publishing workflows.
The new system is built with more robust technologies, ensures that open access standards are included for better access and dissemination and provides also digital preservation and archiving services. In fact, through the implementation of the new FAO Open Archive, we will grant the long term preservation of all FAO publication.
The release of the FAO Open Archive will take place in different phases during a period starting in November 2011 and ending in April 2012.
Web publishing
We provide guidance on publishing and reviewing web pages and web sites:
- setting up or reviewing the objectives and expected outcomes
- researching and studying comparable sites (benchmarking)
- defining the audience and incorporating users needs in the planning
- creating a content strategy
- designing the site (Information Architecture, look and feel)
- implementing it.
We also monitor the sites after their publication in order to maintain their relevance and quality over time.
Aspects included in the quality check are related to content, compliance with standards, search engine optimization, language coverage, consistency and technical quality.
Upon request we can also perform an in-depth assessment for improving the usability and visibility of the sites, including creating a social media strategy, advising on recommended actions to take.
All Web sites on FAO servers need to be compliant with quality criteria and should obtain a clearance prior to publication. The criteria include web usability and accessibility as well as compliance with FAO corporate identity for all FAO domains.
