How can we sustain the interest and motivation of the people who participate in the knowledge network or community?
One size does not fit all. Once you know there is interest in people coming together to form a network, cultivate and develop this interest among the group of people who will potentially form the network.
Different networks will have different interests depending on the personalities, approaches and needs of those involved. What does the network require? Is this a networking activity that is short-term, or is an on-going activity? Adapt your approaches to the nature of the network you are trying to sustain.
An important principle about networking: people will not participate in the activity unless there is something in it for them as individuals, as well as something for their departments, divisions and institutions. Try to get to know your community to learn about member needs, wants and expectations. Then do your best to provide for those.
Appropriate methodologies and technologies should be selected for different types of networks. Resources need to be allocated to train the people who are involved in knowledge networking activities, including preparation of guidelines and development of technology.
